Culturally Relevant Literacy Pedagogy
Val Brown, professional developer with Teaching Tolerance and creator of #ClearTheAir, and Dr. Dana Stachowiak, TheEdCollab Network Member and contributing author to Culturally Affirming Literacy Practices for Urban Elementary Students, lead this session which will encourage and equip K-12 educators to engage in critical reflection about their pedagogy and develop inclusive, responsive, anti-biased literacy practices. This session will move beyond social justice 101 and help K-12 literacy educators plan pedagogy and curriculum critically. If you have asked questions like: "How do we plan literacy instruction that supports and celebrates all learners?" or "I have been focusing on reading 'diverse books', what can I do next?" or have been looking for ways to develop more culturally relevant and sustaining literacy teaching, you will leave full of inspiration, critical reflection, and practical ideas. With considerations for literacy educators, coaches, and leaders, the session will help you support students—and colleagues—in critically conscious planning, teaching, and learning.
