Special guest Amy Ludwig VanDerwater, author of Poems are Teachers: How Studying Poetry Strengthens Writing In All Genres and of many books of poetry for children, including her newest Dreaming of You and With My Hands: Poems About Making Things, will lead this session on how reading, studying, and experimenting with poetry can strengthen students’ writing and themselves as writers. Amy will share inspiration and practical strategies to bring to your classroom not just for Poetry Month, but all year long!

No purchase necessary to enter. Two methods of entry:

  1. (This method is equal to 5 entries, giving you 5 chances to win): Join the live streaming session on April 18 between 11AM and Noon EST, and share a comment in the chat box. You must be registered to the session and first and last name must be visible in the chat box. To simplfy selection and ensure fair accounting, only the registered member may enter in this fashion. You may make the independent decision to give the book to a member of your group if viewing together, should you win. Each comment is equal to 5 entries, up to a maximum of 10 comments (equal to 50 entries) during the live session.
  2. (This method is equal to 1 entry, giving you 1 chance to win): Any time between April 4 and the start of the live session at 11AM EST on April 18, tweet including both (a) the hashtag #StudySeriesPoetryMonth and (b) the link to this session:  Each tweet is equal to one entry.


  • Open to all U.S. residents, 18 years or older at the time of entry, who can accept delivery at a U.S. mailing address. (Sorry international viewers!) Entries must be valid as described above.
  • Only one (1) book per winner. Books are paired to winners at random and may not be traded.
  • Winners will be notified via twitter or email by May 5 and must reply within 10 days and supply delivery information to a valid U.S. mailing address. If information is not provided by this time the entry will be void. In such a case, a new winner will be selected and notified and will have 10 days to respond. After two failed attempts, per book, no additional substitute winners will be selected.
