Support and Affirm

Lamar Timmons-Long, member of TheEdCollab member, High School English Teacher and member of the NCTE LGBTQ Advisory Commitee and Maggie B. Roberts, TheEdCollab member, and co-author of DIY Literacy, lead this one-hour session designed to support K-12 educators to create a classrooom and school culture that afiirms LGBTQIA+ students and adults. Whether you identify with the community, consider yourself an ally, or are interested in learning how to push your inclusive literacy environment farther, this session will be both inspirational and provide practical steps to think more critically about your practice. The 2019 GLSEN School Climate Survey reveals that a majority of students who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community feel unsafe in their schools, even in schools that believe they are working to "care for all." This session will be an important one to view with colleagues and think together about how you create learning environments that affirm all children.

Standards-aligned: CCSS R10, W10; Danielson: 1, 2a-b, 3, 4a, d-e; ISTE 1, 2, 3, 6, 7; Teaching Tolerance: Identity, Diversity, Justice, Action

Each session is linked to professional and learning standards. As every district is different, crosswalk these between your own standards for alignment or contact us with questions.
