Reaching Independent Reading's Full Potential
Dr. Chantal Francois, co-author of Catching Up On Conventions, and Heather Rocco, awarding winning English supervisor—both TheEdCollab Network Members—will lead this session on reflecting on your independent reading practice and going further to make this time vibrant, responsive, and effective. Research is clear: time reading, in texts students are engaged in and are appropriately challenging, move reading achievement forward. While simply providing time to read is an essential classroom practice to support student achievement, there are many ways to make this time even more effective. Students can disengage, fake read, or simply not practice skills to their greatest potential. Chantal and Heather will share multiple strategies and structures for helping you run (and get the most from) a choice reading time in your classroom. Drawing on work across grade levels, as well as research-driven methods, learn how to design teaching to match student needs. Along the way, the session will answer some of your most pressing classroom challenges, using real-school examples. When we design our independent reading time, in service of our readers, incredible growth is possible!
