Study Series Session 5: Make Reading Conferring Work
Responsive Guided Reading
Kate Roberts, TheEdCollab Network Member and author of A Novel Approach, and Kristi Mraz, co-author of Kids First From Day One, lead this session on tackling one of the most challenging, yet more rewarding, parts of reading instruction: the reading conference. Dig into nuts and bolts of this important method while also reflecting on ways to refine your practice. How do you have meaningful conversations with readers when you do not know their book? What are the other students doing while you attempting to confer? How do you keep track of the many needs in your room? Regardless of your grade level, this session will support you in working with everyone from young and emergent readers up through sophisticated readers. Drawing on decades of reading research and practice, as well as the presenters work in classrooms around the world, this session will support you in strengthen (or even starting if you are not yet using!) this effective and important method. Conversations with readers, when purposeful, can become the heartbeat of your classroom.
